Shooting Video – Our main beginners production course

This introduction to video-making covers the whole process of video production from the initial idea through to a final programme. The course is designed for those wishing to make that first step into video production. Students will work in two groups of four producing two short videos using professional digital video cameras and editing digitally with Adobe Premiere software. This course is run with the collaboration of Abingdon and Witney College.

£243 (includes10 per cent early booking discount if booked by 25th September 2012 by– EU citizens)

£270 Subsidised rate for EU citizens

£320 Full price for non-EU citizens. (Non-Eu citizens with indefinite leave to remain can pay subsidised rate – proof required.)

£135 – includes 50% discount for people on benefits, JSA and ESA only, proof required. Note – some courses have different criteria and accept a larger range of benefits. If you are on JSA or ESA we would recommend you do Shooting Video Intensive instead as it is only £30 (with proof)

Course Outline

Pre-Production
WEEK 1: 09/10/12 WEEK 1:  Screening of previous course work and related films and videos, with analysis and discussion from the group.  Introduction to shot types and how they are used in film. Introduction to video production and first look at the video cameras.  Students practice setting up and de-rigging cameras and sound kit. (7.00pm – 9.30pm)
WEEK 2: 16/10/12 WEEK 2: Camera shot types, camera movements and compositional rules.
Students film a storyboard supplied by the tutor and rotate roles in the production process.  Introduction to storyboarding. Discuss and develop ideas for their shoot. (7.00pm – 9.30pm)
WEEK 3: 23/10/12 The use of lighting to enhance video: lighting to create mood and atmosphere. Discussion of white Balance and colour temperature and its effect on video. Use of full lighting kit with practice shoot based on a short script supplied by the tutor. Further development of production ideas.
WEEK 4: 30/10/12The use of sound:  looking at film clips and the various ways sound can enhance a video. Sound recording and microphone operation, how different microphones are used in different situations. Further storyboarding. Development of production ideas.    (7.00pm – 9.30pm)
WEEK 5: 06/11/12Full production kit use – Camera, microphones. Adoption of production team roles.  Recce, script outline and storyboarding. Finalize preparation for shoot. (7.00pm – 9.30pm)
Students will probably need to meet in their production groups at other times during the course in preparation for the shoot.

  

Production
WEEK 5:10/11/12 or 11/11/12 Shoot weekend.
During this week, both groups will go out on location to shoot their productions; this takes place at the weekend.
Each group has around 6 hours in which to shoot the video and in this time every member of the group rotates production roles, taking it in turns to direct, operate the camera, the lights and sound record, etc. (Saturday or
Sunday, (usually start at 10am, depending on production.)
Post-Production
WEEK 6: 13/11/12 Edit suite introduction and Viewing of rushes, logging. (7.00pm – 10pm)
WEEK 7: 20/11/12 Creating edit decision list, Digitising picture and sound rushes, setting up your project and beginning the edit. (7.00pm – 10.00pm)
WEEK8: (Consists of usual evening class on Tuesday evening plus editing day on Sunday)
Tuesday: 27/11/12 Continuing edit. (7.00pm – 10.00pm)
Sunday: 02/12/12 Completion of rough cut of rushes, Fine cut editing and sound track make up, adding graphics for titling.Screening of finished video and critique. We will also hold a discussion on progression routes for students.
Further education options and follow-on courses available and careers advice. Your tutor will also be able to give advice on personal video projects that you may have and would like to pursue. (11am-6pm)

 

NB: Course content may change according to participants needs.
At the end of the course, everyone will receive a DVD copy of your finished video.  The course is accredited via the Open College Network and all those that complete the course will receive a certificate in post sometime after the course ends.
